How a MID is built
- Country: the ISO code of the country of origin of the goods. Canada uses a province code instead (XO for Ontario, XQ for Quebec…).
- Name: the first three letters of the first two words of the manufacturer's name. “A”, “an”, “and”, “of” and “the” are skipped; hyphenated words count as one; initials that run together count as one word.
- Street number: the first four digits of the largest number on the street address line (a suite or P.O. box counts if it is the largest).
- City: the first three letters of the city. City-states use the country name: Hong Kong → HON, Singapore → SIN.
The result is at most 15 characters. Use the manufacturer — the company that made the goods — not a trading company or the seller, unless they are the same.
Rules from 19 CFR Part 102, Appendix (Textile and Apparel Manufacturer Identification), which CBP applies to the MID on all entries. Always check unusual names by hand.
Check the whole shipment, not one number
FreightProof reads the invoice, packing list and bill of lading together, validates every HTS number and container, builds the MIDs and flags what does not match — in about two minutes.
